Description:

ICING COURSE

Effective Use of CFD for In-flight Icing Certification

November 6 to 9, 2006 - Barcelona, Spain

THE COURSE

Aircraft, Helicopters and UAVs flying through icing clouds encounter the problem of ice formation on critical surfaces and on engines. This can jeopardize flight by altering aerodynamic performance and handling qualities. While such problems have been traditionally studied by icing tunnels and flight tests, at high cost, simulation by CFD is proving itself a cost-effective, flexible and effective aid-to-design-and-certification tool. The current trend is to bring to bear "advanced" 3D simulation tools and new physical models, to more completely explore the combined flight and icing envelopes, optimize designs, and focus tunnel and flight tests.

The course illustrates the state-of-the-art in CFD icing simulations and links theory to applications through demonstrations and training. This course should be of value to all involved in in-flight icing and is structured to be of equal interest to icing codes users, ice detection and protection manufacturers, regulators, ACOs, DERs, aircraft manufacturers, and accident investigators. The instructors bring a wealth of aggregate knowledge, as they comprise scientists, engineers, designers, regulators and code developers.
