LES4ICE - LES for Internal Combustion Engine Flows
2nd announcement and final programme available! The LES4ICE workshop aims at providing a forum for exchanges concerning recent advances in research on and the use of Large-Eddy Simulation (LES) applied to internal combustion engine flows, injection and combustion. The aim is to bring together engine designers and players in LES research worldwide and have them compare views on the state of the art in LES applied to ICEs and on the bottlenecks future research will have to overcome.

announcement

Context & Objectives

LES opens up new prospects for the use of CFD in the piston engine design process. It can be expected to definitively improve the description of engine aerodynamics, because the steady growth of computing power will make it possible to resolve the essential part of the flow energy in LES, yielding increasingly reliable results. In the next 10 years, this opens up the prospect of using LES for numerical investigations of engine aerodynamics capable of yielding reliable quantitative results that could potentially further reduce development times and costs for new concepts.

But there are many open questions, ranging from basic modelling, through the appropriate numerical methods, to methodology and CPU time issues, that will have to be answered before LES can attain its full potential in ICE simulation and design. It is the goal of the LES4ICE conference to provide a unique opportunity to keep up with the relevant R&D.

How to propose a Contribution

Authors wishing to deliver presentations during the workshop are encouraged to submit proposals on the following or related topics:

  • Development and validation of LES models for turbulence, liquid sprays and combustion in ICEs;
  • Techniques allowing the incorporation of realistic chemistry in LES of ICEs (auto-ignition, pollutant production);
  • Development of LES methodologies for practical use on problems of industrial
  • Practical experience in applying CFD codes to the LES of flows of interest in ICEs: e.g. flows in steady-state test benches, intake flows, injection under engine conditions, full engine cycles, flows in the after- treatment system, etc.;
  • Comparisons of LES with other approaches, in particular RANS or U-RANS, on configurations of practical interest for ICEs.
  • Experimental techniques and databases with strong potential for validating the LES of ICEs, in particular when it comes to predicting unsteady behaviour;
  • Numerical and computational techniques with potential to facilitate and speed up the use of LES in ICE geometry, including innovative dedicated numerical schemes, advanced mesh management techniques for complex moving meshes, innovative computer architectures, etc.;
"LES" in the workshop context encompasses such approaches as DES, V-LES and MILES, i.e. approaches aimed at resolving at least part of the instantaneous flow structures. <>

Proposals for contributions should consist of a 1000-word abstract of the research work and be of sufficient quality and scope to allow their consistency with workshop objectives and the progress they report to be evaluated. They may also include one additional page with figures or tables to illustrate the main accomplishments.
The proposal abstract must comply with the following rules:
  • be written in English;
  • state the title of the proposed presentation and name its authors and their affiliation(s);
  • correspond to an oral presentation of 20-25 minutes duration;
  • be sent by email only to the Scientific Contact, christian.angelbe rger@ifp.fr .

Registration Fees

Registration fees will cover conference participation, coffee breaks and lunches on both days, the conference reception on the evening of 1 December, a book of abstracts and a CD containing the presentations.

  • Industrial companies: 600€ (V.A.T. included)
  • University members and students: 450€ (V.A.T. included)
In order to receive all necessary information for registration and to be informed of the final programme mail request to Bettina.CARUSO@ifp.fr with "LES4ICE"  as subject.
