Heat exchanger manufacture is a multi-billion dollar engineering activity worldwide. While traditional engineering design methods based on lumped-parameter methods such as LMTD, F-chart, P-NTU, method, as well as other presumed-flow procedures such as the Delaware method are still used; advanced computer methods, previously reserved to aerospace and nuclear industries have in many instances become the tool-of-choice for design of industrial heat exchangers. Low cost, high-speed computers and user-friendly software are now readily available worldwide. Computational methods for heat exchanger design range from simple digital versions of former chart-based methods, ‘presumed flow methods’ right through to detailed computational fluid dynamics analyses capable of capturing the fine-scale motion of the working fluids. However there are a number of major technical challenges facing the code designer. The organizers of the symposium invite software developers, academics and industry experts to share knowledge, and discuss present needs in view of the rapid spread of modern numerical methods for daily use of industry in the area of heat exchangers. Active participation of industry, academics and software developers is invited foster and stimulate discussion of the needs, trends and problems in the area of numerical simulation applied to conventional and/or novel heat exchangers.
