Introduction

The First International Symposium on CWE (CWE1992) was held in Tokyo and chaired by S. Murakami. It was initiated by the JAWE to activate and promote research on CFD technology and to develop various research fields using CFD in wind engineering. The CWE1992 was followed by the CWE1996 in Fort Collins chaired by R.N. Meroney and B. Bienkiewicz and the CWE2000 in Birmingham chaired by C. Baker. These symposia have become important events of the IAWE, and they needs to continue in order to provide a platform for discussing and exchanging the latest information associated with the application of CFD to wind engineering problems. There have been tremendous advances in CFD technology in the past several years since the last CWE was held in 2000.

There are many emerging issues of our concerns in the field of wind engineering. These concerns are not only about wind hazard mitigation, but also cover air contamination problems near and in the far field of buildings, natural/cross ventilation and, wind energy utilization which aims to preserve natural resources and to realize a sustainable society. CFD is one of the promising technologies to investigate these issues in addition to traditional wind tunnel experiments. CWE does not necessarily mean CFD only, but can include various techniques associated with computers and computing. The major topics for this symposium are:

• Flow over complex terrains

• Flow around bluff bodies

• Flow-induced vibration
• Pedestrian wind environment
• Indoor/Outdoor air pollution
• Air-contamination problems
• Full-scale data for validation of CFD
• Wind tunnel data for validation of CFD
• Other wind problems with computational aid

200-word abstract (in English) is due by September 30, 2005. Abstracts will be reviewed by the Scientific Committee, and authors will be notified of acceptance by December 31,2005. Four-page extended abstract is due no later than March 31, 2006. Abstracts should be submitted electronically, preferably in pdf format, whose file name should contain the name of the first author (e.g., tamura_CWE2006.pdf) For each paper submitted, send an email to cwe2006@arch.t-kougei.ac.jp with the pdf file attached.
