Position:
- Research Associate/ Post-Doc (m,f,x) for the development of 3D flow
simulation methods (CFD) - The effect of alcohol fuels on cavitation and spray
formation in maritime high-pressure injection devices, for 3 years, 39.83hours
per week, TVL E14
Description:
- The main research topic of the Chair of Hydraulic Fluid Machinery
(HSM) is
the development of customised CFD methods for the numerical simulation of
multiphase flow in fluid machinery and their components. In maritime
powertrains, alternative fuels for internal combustion engines, such as alcohol
fuels, are considered. For example, the use of methanol fundamentally affects
cavitation structures and flow aggressiveness in injectors compared to
conventional fuels. In a large consortium with international academic and
industrial partners, new CFD methods for assessing cavitation, cavitation
erosion, and spray characteristics of alcohol fuels in maritime high-pressure
fuel injection devices are to be developed.
Tasks:
- Development and application of compressible, shock-resolving 3D
simulation methods (CFD) for cavitating flow
- Self-dependent customization of OpenFOAM
- Simulation of cavitating in-nozzle flow in high-pressure fuel
injection devices for maritime applications
- Development of an in-nozzle flow – spray interface for a seamless
simulation of in-nozzle flow and liquid jet break-up
- Turbulence scale resolving or adaptive simulations
- High-Performance-Computing (HPC) application on large-capacity
computers
- Writing of scientific papers
- Close cooperation with international industry and academic
partners
- Independent initiation of project proposals is highly welcome
Profile:
- PhD / Dr. rer. nat. / Dr.-Ing. Degree in mechanical
engineering, computer science, physics, applied mathematics or a related
discipline
- Strong academic track record or experience with industry-driven
projects
- Expertise in the use of OpenFOAM
- Developer skills of OpenFOAM
- Teaching experience is advantageous
- Advanced programming skills, ideally in C++
- Proactivity, ambition, and purposefulness
- Strong communication skills, both spoken and written
- Knowledge of or willingness to learn German
- Enjoying teamwork
Offer:
- Support from and cooperation with competent colleagues
- Team-oriented cooperation in a committed, international, and
appreciative team
- Employment at one of the largest universities in Germany within the
University Alliance Ruhr
- Options for flexible working
