Employer Chair of Hydraulic Fluid Machinery, Ruhr Universität Bochum
LocationGermany, Bochum
InternationalYes, international applications are welcome
Closure DateSunday, December 08, 2024
Description:
Position:
  • Scientific employee / Research Associate / PhD (m/f/d) in the field of unsteady flow simulation (3D CFD) and local entropy evaluation for loss quantification in hydraulic fluid machines for a period of 3 years with 39.83 hours per week (TV-L E13)
Description:
  • One of the main research areas of the Chair of Hydraulic Fluid Machinery (HSM) is the development of 3D CFD methods for the numerical simulation of flows in fluid energy machines and their components. In the doctoral project, turbulence-scale-resolving/adaptive simulation methods are to be expanded to include a time-resolved and local evaluation of entropy production and validated on complex flows, e.g., pump flows. Particular attention is paid to wall treatment and hybrid turbulence modeling. The doctoral project offers the opportunity to delve deeply into the development of CFD methods with a focus on turbulence and loss modeling and is carried out in close cooperation with industry.
Tasks:
  • Development of 3D flow simulation methods (CFD) based on OpenFOAM
  • Development of a scale-adaptive simulation method based on the k-ε-V2F model
  • Evaluation of entropy production
  • Development of entropy wall functions
  • Validation on measurement and DNS data
  • Application to flows in rotating systems such as centrifugal pumps
  • High-performance computing (HPC) / application on mainframe computers
  • Writing scientific publications in English
  • Support in teaching
  • Coordination with the developers of commercial CFD methods
  • Close cooperation with the fluid machine industry and other university institutes
Profile:
  • Completed degree in mechanical engineering, computer science, physics, applied mathematics or a related discipline
  • Above-average academic performance, especially in basic subjects such as (numerical) mathematics, (fluid) mechanics, thermodynamics, heat and mass transfer
  • CFD knowledge, ideally developer and OpenFOAM knowledge
  • Experience in teaching is advantageous, e.g., acquired as a student assistant
  • Programming skills, ideally in C++
  • Proactivity, ambition, and purposefulness
  • Strong communication skills, both spoken and written
  • Knowledge of or willingness to learn German
  • Enjoying teamwork
Offer:
  • Support from and cooperation with competent colleagues
  • Team-oriented cooperation in a committed, international, and appreciative team
  • Employment at one of the largest universities in Germany within the University Alliance Ruhr
  • Options for flexible working
  • Possibility of obtaining a doctorate (Dr.-Ing.)
